GCCC International Initiatives

Historically, the Gulf Coast Carbon Center (GCCC) has had a global impact participating and leading international initiatives to promote carbon capture and carbon storage. The GCCC has or is actively providing expertise to CCS teams and projects around the world including those in Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, Guyana, India, Indonesia, Japan, Morocco, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan, Trinidad & Tobago, and the United Kingdom. The following list includes the GCCC’s international impacts and highlights:

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Conference of Parties (UNFCCC COP)   Since 2011, GCCC Researchers proactively provided, and continue to spread, carbon capture and storage (CCS) information and awareness at the UNFCCC COPs held around the world. At COP events, the GCCC currently partners with IEA Greenhouse Gas Research & Development Programme (IEAGHG), Carbon Capture & Storage Association (CCSA), and the International CCS Knowledge Centre to help circulate CCS information at “official UNFCCC side events” and exhibits. International Workshop on Offshore Geologic CO2 Storage   Since 2016, GCCC Researchers have actively facilitated and continue to organize an international workshop to increase networking and communications about global needs for offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects. In collaboration with IEAGHG, the GCCC organizes this reoccurring international workshop to help identify synergies between international communities and various parties interested in and actively pursuing the storage of carbon offshore. Network of National CCUS Centers of Excellence (NNCCE)   On July 31, 2025, the GCCC and IEAGHG launched the NNCCE to connect national institutions in the Global South; strengthen carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) capacity; and improve access to technology transfer and climate finance mechanisms such as the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The NNCCE addresses shared barriers, like financing, data access, and regulatory gaps, through regular dialogue, peer collaboration, and coordinated advocacy to accelerate deployment and south-south cooperation. Testing Offshore Monitoring Technologies near Tomakomai, Japan   The GCCC partnered with Japan CCS Co., Ltd. to help monitor the progress of an offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) site, referred to as Tomakomai, near the City of Tomakomai on the island of Hokkaido, Japan. GCCC researchers collaborated with Japanese CCS scientists and engineers for a two-way transfer of seismic monitoring technologies. The GCCC was tasked with broadly validating the monitoring, verification, and assessment (MVA) technologies for an offshore area above the injection site. The GCCC acquired and processed a high-resolution 3D (HR3D) seismic dataset at operational CCS field demonstration project; developed and validated untested dynamic acoustic positioning techniques; and verified CO2 containment in the injection zone. GCCC Researchers also performed marine environmental monitoring in the waters surrounding the injection location. Click here to learn more.
